I noted to my partner as we listened to the presentation in real time: “this sounds like every poet I’ve ever heard who’s done well at the US National Poetry Slam.” It’s fine, it has its place, but I personally don’t find it particularly unique or distinctive. But she’s 22 and still finding her own voice, and needs to start somewhere. Which is an incredible statement given her level of success so far. The day she figures out what *she* sounds like and not what she thinks she should emulate is a day the world should eagerly await.
